Canine General Information

Q. How often does a dog go into heat?
A.
About every six months after six months of age.  
                        
Q. How long do dogs stay in heat?
A.
For up to four weeks.

Q. What is the gestation period for a dog?
A.
61 to 63 days.

Q. Is it safe to spay my dog while in heat?
A.
Yes, however there may be excessive bleeding and extended surgery time.

Q. When should I start my puppy vaccinations?
A.
At seven to eight weeks of age.

Feline General Information

Q. How often does a cat go into heat?

It starts at age six to eight months and continues off and on until conception during mating season.

Dental Information

Q. What are the signs of dental problems?
A.
One of the signs is bad breath; also they may stop eating or have visible tarter build up on the teeth.

Q. What can I do if I notice a dental problem?
A.
Make an appointment with your veterinarian.  We have the dental equipment necessary to clean or remove involved teeth.

Q. How often should I get my pets teeth cleaned?
A.
They need to be checked annually and cleaned if needed.

Q. How often should I bath my pet?
A.
It is safe to use a mild shampoo once a week.

Q. Should I shave my pet in the summer?
A.
It is necessary only if the hair is thickly matted.

Laboratory Information

Q. Why would it be necessary to have lab work done on my pet?
A.
Because by testing the blood, feces and urine we can detect serious illnesses.

Q. What are some of the things that can be detected by testing the blood?
A.
We can see if your pet has kidney failure, diabetes, thyroid problems, liver disorders, blood cell count and much more.

Q. How do I know if my pet has worms?
A.
He/she may have a loss of appetite and weight, visible signs in the stool or noticeable changes in the color and consistency of the stool.

Q. How often should I get my pet checked for worms?
A.
Every six months by laboratory fecal examination.

Q. How do dogs get heartworms?
A.
Heartworm is caused by the bite of an infected mosquito which can be detected through a blood test.

Q. How can I keep my dog from getting heartworms?
A.
We carry heartworm preventives such as Heartguard, Revolution, & Proheart.

Q. What do you have for fleas and ticks?
A.
We carry Advantix, Advantage, and Frontline applicators.  We also have shampoos, sprays, and premise sprays.

Q.  I think my dog has arthritis, what do you have for that?
A.
  We carry Rimadyl, a non-sterodial anti-inflammatory, which helps most patients.

Q. What shampoo should I use?
A.
  We carry Vet Solutions, Mico Pearls, DVM Shampoos and more. Call or come into the office for a recommendation.

Q. What should I do to improve the condition of my pet’s coat? 
A.
  We carry a variety of dietary supplements including 3V Caps, Derma Caps, Pet Tabs Vitamins, Missing Link and more.
